Topic: Zinger is at the shop Posted: 16 Oct 2009 at 12:32am |
We picked up the GMC today but it wont be ready to pull Zingie until we get new tires for it and switch hitches and a few other things. We're taking off in the morning for the Samboree about 25 miles from here. This may be the last time the Astro pulls it. I'm aware the weight in the van also counts. The smaller Astro was rated at 5,000.... and this larger V8 is only rated 500 lbs more? Eeeeek! I was sure it would be rated around 6000. Oh well.... I went through Zingie this morning and removed everything I felt we wont need until the longer trip next month. Probably not more than 100 lbs of "stuff."

You may be right,,for me to tell you for sure the towing capacity I need to know if it's a 1500,,2500 or 3500,,and if it's a passenger van or a cargo van and on the spec site I go to it show the van comes with three different size engines and they show them in and tow specs from 4 to 6 thousand lbs....Here's the specs on a 1999 1500 van

Thanks for that information. Last week we bought a larger (used) van to pull Zingie with. It's a GMC Savana 1500. It's longer, heavier and has a much longer wheel base. But we can't figure out it's max capacity because we don't know, can't find what the rear ratio is.

In the glove box on the door there is a list giving the maanufacturing codes. Cal up a GM Dealer, and ask the service department what code to look for and the will tell you. The other thing is to take the Vin number to you local dealer, and have them run it for you. The report will give all options on the unit including the rear gear. Also will tell if there are any open recalls.

There is no glove box and the info on the door isn't helpful. It's some kind of conversion van and was used to carry passengers. Calling a dealer with the vin # is probably the only way we'll know for sure. All we know now is it's a 1500, V8 with a 5.7 liter engine. We went camping with it this past weekend and it pulled our Zinger just fine.... but it was mainly level land. We barely felt the TT back there.
